I vastly enjoyed Sophie Elmhirst’s article on the final of the UK’s phone containers (The long study, 28 April). In the leisurely 1980s, I labored for British Telecom in east London and when a new boss of “public call offices” (as phone containers were formally called) was once appointed, I was once asked to fetch him on a tour of some of his new property. I took him to the positioning of one that I knew was once steadily vandalised. All that remained were a few steel stubs poking out of the ground. It no longer no longer up to gave the brand new guy a in fact feel for the scale of his job. From what I be conscious, he didn’t final long.

Your article was once a joyous day out down memory lane. In the mid-1980s, I was once the press officer for the world division of British Telecom. Consequently of a lack of curiosity from the corporate centre, I stumbled on myself managing the 30 or so BT district press officers dotted around the UK on issues of pink phone containers. As fragment of that, in tandem with my BT colleague Dave Wenlock, I toured colleges, Dave suitably sporting his “Mr Payphone” costume, imparting to younger youth the importance to the workers of a working, reliable payphone network, key in those pre-mobile phone days. Most lively recollections.

Cities that also enjoy a mobile telephone kiosk designed by Giles Gilbert Scott would per chance maybe take to recognise its mark by making it a listed constructing. Here in Shoreham-by-Sea, we dangle one that’s Grade II-listed. The 1920s Properties for Heroes Sea Mills property in Bristol has one that contains its museum. These very British constructions deserve to be retained, if true for their visual importance.

We mute dangle a (working) pink mobile telephone box in Low Mill, Farndale. Provided that you just potentially can no longer fetch a mobile phone signal right here, one of this showcase day this may approach in beneficial. In the duration in-between, its foremost role will live performing as a focal level for every photographer passing through (pink phone box, 19th-century stone bridge and a chapel – the epitome of the North York Moors).

Attach the Gilbert Scott cubicles, nonetheless fetch away the total disgusting 1990s BT containers from our pavements: at any time when one is removed, a tree is planted in that hole. Easy.
