LAPLAND, FINLAND – DECEMBER 2022: To ring in the Christmas season, Santa’s main post office in Rovaniemi, Finland, together with Posti, the Finnish postal service, analyzed hundreds of letters written to Santa by children and adults from all over the world. Data on Santa’s letters shows that the main Christmas wishes relate much more to family, health and happiness than to electronics and toys.

  • Every year over half a million letters arrive at Santa’s Main Post Office, Finland’s northernmost post office in the Arctic Circle in Rovaniemi, Santa’s official hometown. In the run-up to Christmas, up to 30,000 letters arrive every day. Over the years, Santa Claus has received over 20 million letters from 200 countries.

    Young and young at heart , mostly between the ages of 8 and 25, write to Santa Clause asking for a range of things from the latest toys to world peace. From the data collected from the letters for 2022, the top three concerns are health, family and socializing.

    “Analysis of the letters illustrates the emotional reality of the world we live in and proves that our loved ones and the ‘little things in Living’ how being together is what matters most,” said Jenni Ihatsu, Posti’s brand and marketing director. “At a time marked by a pandemic, civil unrest and climate threats, it seemed important to address these issues and remind america that no matter where we are, our feelings and desires are very similar.”

    Santa’s main post office receives letters for Santa and his elves all year round. If you want to get into the Christmas spirit, you can visit the post office, meet with the elves and even write your own letters and hand them over personally.

    “Reading letters to Santa Claus is one of the nicest parts of our job. We love making people around the world happy, and it’s always fascinating to see what people want,” says Katja Tervonen, head elf at Santa’s main post office Letter less about material things and more about togetherness, family and being happy. That’s what the Christmas season is all about.”

    The most common concerns raised in the Christmas letters to Santa include:

  • Belief in Santa Claus

  • Christmas gifts
  • Feedback from Santa Claus
  • Finland

  • The letters asked not only about things, but also about Santa Claus himself – with best wishes for him and his reindeer, asking that the staff get enough rest, and with the encouragement of cookies and carrots on Christmas Eve. Another question that appeared in many letters was the well-known question: “Santa Claus, do you really exist?”

    Avid letter writers will get a reply from Santa himself if they include their mailing address with their transient. Santa’s Main Post Office sends out over 10,000 replies each year.
